The Well House
by Murrie GaymanThe little well house southeast of the Moland House will be an important part of the visitors' experience. It is currently being restored by master carpenter and preservation expert Bill Marek, Jr. He is uncovering the story of this 1850 structure layer by layer, so that John Milner Architects can direct its' reconstruction.
The well house features a very unusual cove shape at the roofline. It was probably used for food preparation and canning, and had shelves on the walls and a stove chimney in the rear.
The well was protected by a roofed structure open on two sides and supported by the stone wall extension on the south wall. The basement, though presently very difficult to enter, was a root cellar and features a very attractive vaulted stone ceiling.
All of the flagstone steps adjacent to the well house were added in the 1940's, and will have to be removed to bring this little treasure to its original appearance.
