Moland House Outreach Program

GENERAL WASHINGTON'S HEADQUARTERS AT THE MOLAND HOUSE

Education about our local history and heritage is a primary interest at the Moland House and for WTHS. So we have created a program 60 to 75 minutes long.  The class is divided into three groups.  These groups rotate between stations featuring the following lessons:

Station 1 - There were 11,000 troops at the Moland House with General Washington.  A number were young militia soldiers.  We explain that they were called to duty for 60 days as required by law.  They were homesick, lonely, and full of mischief.  We ask the students using quills and ink to write to someone about their stay at the Moland House.

Station 2 - Each Brigade from the different states carried its own flag.  They came from many states so there was a great variety of flags.  Divide the group into brigades with 5 students per brigade. Each decides what their brigade's headquarters flag will be.  Using construction paper, scissors, and glue, they will create their unique flag.

Station 3 - Colonial Let's Make a Deal - The group will split into three teams with each selecting a leader.  One team represents the people of means, another the residents around the Moland House in 1777, therefore ordinary citizens; and the third soldiers.  There will be several categories of items on a table, each category containing 6-7 choices.  The leaders will pick out which items reflect their class in society.  Each right guess earns that team a piece of Continental money.  The team with the most money is the winner.

Each station lasts 20 minutes with 5 minutes allotted for groups to change stations.
