5th Annual Reenactment of the Encampment

at the Cross Roads near the Neshamini - August 2006

by Jackie Schneck

The weather, which has been unpredictable on our reenactment days (the third Saturday in August) turned out to be very pleasant this year. Many people visited the site with their children to enjoy learning about military life in 1777 from the members of the 5th Pennsylvania and the 1st Continental on Foot. Each of these organizations had a diversity of presentations which prompted many questions from the attendees. Throughout the day the other presenters also seemed to keep busy. The Moland House education department, because of their school programs, has accumulated many colonial toys for the enjoyment of the children. Both young and old loved the challenge of walking on stilts.

It seemed that everyone was interested in the house tours. Each tour was packed to the maximum of 35 people. Each year a limited number come to witness the progress made on the restoration. This year they were overwhelmed with delight at the appearance of the house. We still have to have eleven doors to install but at $1100.00 a door this expense is quite a challenge at this time. Grants are more difficult to obtain than in the past and since there are smaller items to finish up, this project must remain unfinished at this time unless we find a donor. Each door must be hand made with hand tools. It's not that we can go to Home Depot or Lowe's and buy what we need. If anyone out there knows a source for completing this necessary addition to the house or would like to contribute, please let us know.

We are always looking for vendors and/or presenters who would like to be a part of this special day. Please contact us if you are interested.
